Kiko Navarro, Alcaraz's First Coach, Opens Up About the Spaniard: "As a Kid, He Was Sometimes a Bit Too Distracted"

Alcaraz is having a more complicated season than usual. While the Spaniard has accustomed fans to impressive results from a young age, the native of El Palmar has experienced an inconsistent start to the 2025 season.
Despite a title in Rotterdam against De Minaur (6-4, 3-6, 6-2), the 21-year-old player fell in the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and Doha, as well as in the semifinals at Indian Wells.
Even more surprising was a first-round exit at the Miami Masters 1000 against Goffin (5-7, 6-4, 6-3). All this while his main rival, Sinner, remains suspended.
In an interview shared by the media outlet SuperTennis, Kiko Navarro, Alcaraz’s first coach at Real Sociedad Club de Campo de Murcia, gave his analysis of the player he knows very well:
"As a kid, he was sometimes a bit too distracted, even for simple things like bringing rackets or water bottles onto the court. Even during matches, he would occasionally lose focus. It’s something he’s improved, but there’s still room for growth. He wasn’t a super disciplined boy, but in the end, he was still a child. He had to mature."
The 39-year-old coach also discussed all the distractions a champion of his level can face:
"I already sensed he would be special, though certainly not this fast. But I always talked to him about staying grounded, staying close to his people, and keeping his roots.
When you’re at the top, you get approached by people who aren’t part of your circle, by celebrities who want to be close to you.
Here, the team and, of course, the family play a fundamental role. In my opinion, they handle this aspect very well."
