In front of his home crowd in Brisbane, the Australian fell in the first round to Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-3, 6-4).

And in the press conference, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist opened a window on his physical and mental state.

« I will never again have the illusion of being unbeatable »

"There was a moment in my life, in 2022, when I really thought I was the best player in the world. I would go out on the court thinking that no one could beat me.

It's so difficult for me, sometimes even in training, to realize that I no longer have that belief."

The body as a silent enemy

Indeed, after a wrist reconstruction and two knee surgeries, Kyrgios's body began to give out.

"People think that you go under the knife, stay on the couch, and then come back the same. That's not reality."

To support his point, Kyrgios cites meaningful examples: Juan Martin del Potro, Dominic Thiem, or even Kei Nishikori. Players capable of competing for the biggest titles before their bodies betrayed them.

Gratitude rather than anger: a new facet of Kyrgios

Yet, behind that, Kyrgios speaks of his pride in simply being able to play, in still being on his feet.

"I am extremely happy with myself and proud of myself."

He also takes the time to praise his opponent, Kovacevic, highlighting his enthusiasm and potential.

It will really be befitting if he attains his 25th Grand Slam crown at the AO for he's truly the GOAT & this will stamp him & endorse his GOAT status without an iota of doubt

Almost as important to Djokovic as Slam #25--and requiring less luck--is beating Federer's total of 103 singles titles. He'll play 250s, and might even surpass Connors's 109.
