Last-minute withdrawal: Tsitsipas pulls out of Shanghai Masters 1000
The struggles continue for Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek player, seeded 24th, has withdrawn from the Shanghai Masters 1000.
Tsitsipas's 2025 season is one to forget. Apart from a title at the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai at the start of the season, the world number 25 has been struggling to regain confidence and climb back up the rankings.
Forced to retire at Wimbledon and then defeated in the second round of the US Open, the Greek player will ultimately not take part in the Shanghai Masters 1000. While he was scheduled to face Nuno Borges in the last match on Court 3, Tsitsipas ultimately withdrew.
While the reasons for this withdrawal are not yet known, Tsitsipas, 27, has been suffering from recurring back pain for several months, which could explain this last-minute withdrawal.
A quarterfinalist last year in Shanghai, the Greek player will not be able to defend the points he earned in 2024 and is replaced by Aleksandar Vukic. Defeated by Yoshihito Nishioka in the final round of qualifying, the Australian enters the draw in the second round and will therefore face the Portuguese player later today.
