Rublev Already Eliminated, De Minaur Ends His Drought at Shanghai Tournament
Andrey Rublev and Alex De Minaur were on the courts in Shanghai this Saturday morning, with mixed fortunes for these two top 20 players.
Continuation of the second round of the Shanghai Masters 1000.
World No. 14 Andrey Rublev, a finalist in this tournament in 2023, hoped to find success again in the Chinese city, having lost in the first round last year. But things did not go as planned for the Russian.
Facing Yoshihito Nishioka, world No. 173, Rublev started his match well, even easily winning the first set, but the Japanese player, who had already beaten his opponent twice before in five encounters, repeated the feat (2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in 1h47).
Nishioka will face Jaume Munar, who defeated Flavio Cobolli, for a spot in the round of 16. As for Rublev, he has now suffered four consecutive losses since his third-round victory at the US Open against Coleman Wong (2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3) and continues his very average season.
On his side, Alex De Minaur was more reassuring against Camilo Ugo Carabelli. The Argentine, who had benefited from Terence Atmane's withdrawal in the first round, was this time powerless against the Australian's consistency.
Solid on his service games, the world No. 7 did not concede a single break point and won in two sets (6-4, 6-2 in 1h27). De Minaur wins his first match in Shanghai since 2018 and advances to the round of 16. He will face Kamil Majchrzak, who upset Brandon Nakashima (6-4, 6-0).
