Mahut's harsh assessment of Djokovic: "I could really see him ending his career".
Nicolas Mahut spoke to Eurosport about the future collaboration between Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. But in this interview, he also shared his opinion on the level of play shown by the Serb this year.
Currently ranked 7th in the ATP rankings, Novak Djokovic has had an off-season in the Grand Slam, beaten by Jannik Sinner in Australia and Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon.
The 37-year-old former world No. 1 is also the last active member of the Big 3 on Tour.
For Nicolas Mahut, before the announcement of his collaboration with Murray, Djokovic seemed close to retirement: "I was a little pessimistic about him, to be honest. I thought he was heading towards the end.
I couldn't see him winning a Grand Slam in 2025, and I could really see him calling it a day. That was the feeling I had when I saw him evolve. Maybe he felt it too.
Sometimes, when you can't find your own resources, you look a little bit outside, and the fact of renewing the staff can sometimes be a trigger."
