Maylin expresses regrets about Gasquet's career: "It's a waste".
Richard Gasquet will savor the final months of his career.
The 38-year-old Frenchman, who this week took part in the Montpellier tournament for the last time, will retire at the end of the French Open.
On the "Sans Filet" program, Benoît Maylin expressed his regrets about the career of the former 7th-ranked ATP player from Biterrois.
"It's a waste. Richard never went to work, he never went to the gym. He didn't make any effort. In the same generation, there's a guy who's worked hard, and who people were saying was going to be a brawl between the two, and that's Nadal.
He beat Federer in Monte-Carlo in 2005, his first victory over a top 10 player. It was a time when we were saying to ourselves: 'Okay, Rafa's coming, but we don't yet know what it's going to be like'.
And then there was Federer. Behind them, everything was playable at the time, Djokovic wasn't there yet. When he reached the final in Toronto in 2012, it was a real thrill!
He's had some crazy runs. He beat Murray in Rome in 2012. He beat Federer, Djokovic and Roddick at Wimbledon in a completely crazy match.
At that point, until 2010, he should logically have made at least one Wimbledon final. If he'd had the help of his coaches, who should have forced him to get moving, to come out of his cocoon with his parents...
Everyone was protecting him, when he should have been putting himself in danger. He wouldn't have stayed at 16 ATP 250 titles, so what do we care? He's made three Masters 1000 finals, but your name is Richard Gasquet," elaborated Maylin.
