Medvedev on ending his partnership with Cervara: "We parted on very good terms"
After a fruitful collaboration with Gilles Cervara, Daniil Medvedev is beginning a new chapter in his career with two different coaches.
Daniil Medvedev and Gilles Cervara are no longer working together. Following the US Open, the French coach decided to end his partnership with the Russian player that began in 2017.
After reaching world number one and winning the 2021 US Open, Medvedev now needs to revitalize his career, having not won any titles since the 2023 Rome Masters.
With his two new coaches, Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, the world number 18 aims to return to his best form. Currently competing in Beijing, the 29-year-old Medvedev will begin his tournament against Cameron Norrie, who eliminated the Russian in the first round of Roland-Garros earlier this year. Before facing the British player, he reflected on the end of his partnership with Cervara.
"Things will change a bit, these are different people, a new dynamic. For now, it's just a trial period. At the end of the season, I'll take stock and decide what comes next.
With Gilles (Cervara), we experienced great things, and that's why we'll probably never say anything negative about each other. I think about the titles, the big matches, the moments on the court. We parted on very good terms.
It was a pleasure to share all those moments with him, whether in the player's box, on the court during training, or even during dinners—all those things. We had been together for so long that in a way, the question became: do we stay together until the end of my career?
I thought to myself that if we didn't part ways now, then we would see it through together. And sometimes, you just feel like trying something new. This is something I've probably never experienced in my adult career.
Sometimes, when I was younger, I had different coaches, but it was more my parents making the decisions or it depended on the situation. This is the first time in my professional career that I've decided to start something new. For now, it's quite nice," Medvedev told L'Équipe.
