Medvedev on Wawrinka: "He's one of the most humble and kindest players on the ATP circuit".
On Monday evening, the Rotterdam public were treated to a first-round shock at the Dutch tournament. Number 2 seed Daniil Medvedev dominated 39-year-old Stan Wawrinka in a high-level match, even if the Swiss struggled physically towards the end (6-7, 6-4, 6-1).
In a press conference after his success, Medvedev, ranked 7th in the world, spoke about his opponent of the evening.
"He played really well, but that's Stan, that's always the case with him. Of course, he's no longer at his best, which enabled him to win Grand Slams.
I never had the chance to play him when he was at this level, and it's a shame because it would have been a challenge I'd have enjoyed.
I'm sure that in some matches, he would have cut me to pieces, and I would have had to fight like a lion on the court. Stan is an incredible guy.
In my opinion, he's one of the most humble and kindest players on the ATP circuit. When you play with confidence, you win sets you should be losing.
When you don't have confidence, you lose sets you should win. I was thinking, 'I'm playing so badly at the moment', so if I keep pressing and trying to play better, it might pay off.
I'm glad it did today. Hopefully, I'll be able to play better in my next games," he asserted.
