Medvedev painstakingly ousts Wawrinka on his Rotterdam debut
Daniil Medvedev needed three sets to see off veteran Stan Wawrinka (6-7, 6-4, 6-1) in his 1st round match in Rotterdam on Monday evening.
The first set, which lasted 1h10, was full of twists and turns, with Medvedev serving for the set at 5-3, before losing his first game and entering a fierce tie-break in which both men had set points.
In the end, it was Wawrinka, more solid in the exchange, who won the first set after 18 points in the tiebreak (10-8).
Buoyed by this scenario, Medvedev raised his game to take the second set, before unravelling in the third to close out the proceedings after almost two and a half hours of play.
In the next round, the world No. 5 will face either qualifier Mattia Bellucci or local wild-card Mees Rottgering.
