Medvedev surprised by Wu in the quarterfinals in Hangzhou
Daniil Medvedev had successfully started his campaign in Hangzhou against Nishesh Basavareddy. Unfortunately for him, his journey in the tournament has already ended against Yibing Wu.
Yet the match began well for the Russian, who took the first set with a score of 7-5. With a break at the start of the second set, Medvedev was heading toward victory.
However, when serving to win the match, he faltered with a poor service game, including two double faults, handing the break back to his opponent.
He then lost the tiebreak of the second set in a very erratic scenario: the Chinese led 4-0, then Medvedev took the lead 5-4, before losing 7-5.
It was during the 7th game of the final set that the Russian cracked and conceded the break. Before Wu served for the match, the Russian took a medical timeout for pain in his right arm.
Whether it was a real injury or an attempt to disrupt the Chinese player's rhythm, this break did not significantly affect Wu's service game, who eventually won 5-7, 7-6, 6-4.
He will face either Alexander Bublik or Dalibor Svrcina in the semifinals.
