Medvedev talks about Murray: "For now, my career is not comparable to his"
Daniil Medvedev qualified for the round of 16 in Dubai. The Russian, who is trying to regain his confidence after several difficult months in terms of results, eliminated Jan-Lennard Struff (6-4, 7-6) and will face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard for a place in the quarter-finals.
While waiting for this match, the former world number one spoke about his greatest sources of inspiration in an interview with The Khaleej Times.
He talked about Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Stan Wawrinka, but he also wanted to speak about Andy Murray, whom Medvedev had beaten in the final of the Doha tournament in 2023.
"Novak inspires me, even though I know deep down that I won't win 24 Grand Slam titles. Roger also inspires me, even though his playing style was the opposite of mine. Rafa was left-handed, but they all inspired me.
And I would also say that's the case with Andy. The fact that he won two Olympic gold medals is completely crazy.
For now, my career is not comparable to his. He has won so many tournaments (46 on the ATP circuit), Masters 1000s, and many other major titles.
I think I relate a bit more to Stan, who won his first Grand Slam at 29. Murray and Wawrinka are even more inspiring because they occasionally defeated those three guys.
I told myself: 'Okay, I have to do the same.' Recently, my level has been lower than I hoped, but I know what I am capable of," he explains.
