Millman on how to approach retirement as a tennis player
John Millman, former No.33 in the ATP rankings, retired in January 2024, on the occasion of the Australian Open.
In an interview with Tennis Temple, he explains how difficult it is for a tennis player to stop playing tennis after devoting his life to it.
He explains: "It's very difficult. Tennis is in my DNA. It's something I've been doing since I was four years old.
Obviously, when I turned 18, I decided to try doing it at a more professional level.
You spend a lot of time working hard to achieve your dreams and it becomes part of your identity, part of your characteristics.
When you decide to stop, there's a big void to fill, so to speak. You have to learn a lot about who you are without having a tennis racket in your hand.
I think that's when you really step back and rely on the people around you, your loved ones, your entourage, to discover who you are."
