Moutet Advances to Second Round of Monte-Carlo Qualifiers, Gaston Exits Early
Several French players took to the courts this Saturday for the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 qualifiers. Among them was Corentin Moutet. The 25-year-old left-hander faced a tough first-round match against Canadian player Gabriel Diallo.
Moutet had a scare in the first set, which he lost despite serving to take an early lead. However, he didn’t give up and eventually turned the match around (5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in 2 hours and 40 minutes).
Despite hitting 32 winners, Diallo was too inconsistent (52 unforced errors) and not clinical enough on break points (3 out of 12 converted). On the other side, Moutet ultimately wore him down and will now face the winner of the match between David Goffin and Yannick Hanfmann for a spot in the main draw.
Another French player in action on the Monaco clay early in the day was Hugo Gaston. However, the Toulouse native didn’t share Moutet’s success.
Facing Camilo Ugo Carabelli, Gaston put up a fight in the first set before fading in the second (6-4, 6-0). The Argentine, ranked 63rd in the world, will next take on Borna Gojo or Hamad Medjedovic.
