"My goal is to be seeded at the Australian Open," reveals Fonseca after his Roland-Garros exit

For his first Roland-Garros, João Fonseca achieved his best Grand Slam result in his young career. After straight-set wins against Hubert Hurkacz and Pierre-Hugues Herbert, the 18-year-old Brazilian ran into a very solid Jack Draper, world No. 5, who dominated him in three quick sets (6-2, 6-4, 6-2).
In the press conference, the player who reached his career-high ranking last March (No. 59 in the ATP) announced he had set a clear goal for himself by the end of the season.
"I want to play the biggest tournaments. Of course, now I have a good ranking and can compete in Grand Slams. But I also want direct entry into ATP 500s. I’d need to be top 40 or something like that to achieve that.
By the end of the year, my goal is to be seeded at the Australian Open. It’s a personal goal. I know I need time, that I have to deliver good results.
I’m improving and learning as I go, and I don’t feel bad about today’s loss (Saturday against Draper). He’s a great player. I know I didn’t play at my best level.
Now, it’s time to move on and focus on what’s coming in the next few weeks. The grass season is approaching. This is just the beginning. I’ll keep learning and training hard," Fonseca told *The Tennis Letter*.
