Nastase on Sinner: "If he hadn't been number 1 and he was Romanian, he would have been suspended for 2 or 3 years".
The tennis world has been rocked by yet another doping scandal. After Jannik Sinner, number 2 in the WTA rankings, Iga Swiatek, tested positive for trimetazidine.
Ilie Nastase, who was not soft on the Pole, did the same to the Italian, arguing that, depending on the player's status and nationality, the sanction is not the same.
"In Sinner's case, perhaps it frightened those who sit on the ITIA, so his case was referred to CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport).
But if the Italian hadn't been number 1 and was Romanian, how long do you think he would have been suspended?
Probably 2 or 3 years," the former world number 1 told Golazo.ro in recent hours. As a reminder, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) requires a suspension of between one and two years for Sinner.
The Italian tested positive for clostebol, a banned substance, on two occasions during the Indian Wells tournament last March. He was eventually acquitted by the ATP and the ITIA.
