Paul Wins the Showdown Against Fonseca
The fifth day of competition in Madrid concluded with a thrilling match between Tommy Paul and Joao Fonseca. In the end, it was the American, ranked 12th in the world, who had the final say after two tie-breaks (7-6, 7-6) and 2 hours and 7 minutes of play.
Fonseca, who held a 7-1 record on clay this year before this match, gave Paul a tough challenge. The latter was often in trouble on his serves (facing 8 break points), but the Brazilian paid for his lack of efficiency, converting only one break point throughout the match.
The first tie-break could have swung in Fonseca’s favor, as he earned two set points before ultimately surrendering the set. The second tie-break was far less suspenseful, with Paul quickly securing the mini-break.
In the third round, he will face Karen Khachanov in what is sure to be another tightly contested match. Meanwhile, Fonseca continues his rise on the main tour and will now head to the Estoril Challenger, which began this weekend.
