"Playing as many matches as possible with the fewest tournaments possible," Sinner reveals his goals for longevity on the tour
In the press zone at Cincinnati, Sinner discussed his position as world No. 1 and his goals moving forward. Although the Italian hasn’t played many tournaments this year due to his suspension, that hasn’t stopped him from reaching the finals almost every time. In five tournaments, the 23-year-old has won two and reached the final twice. His only underperformance was a second-round loss in Halle against Bublik.
"Being world No. 1 and the one ‘to beat’ is a different feeling, but I’m happy to be here. It’s the best position you can be in. My main goal is to play as many matches as possible during the season with the fewest tournaments possible.
I think if I want to have a longer career, it’s sometimes necessary to take breaks, to work a lot physically so the body keeps functioning. That’s what we’re aiming for right now, but obviously, it’s only possible if you perform well in the tournaments you do play.
I haven’t played many tournaments this year, but I’m fine with that. All the top players in the world, especially the top 5 or 6, are aiming for No. 1. There will always be these battles, these ups and downs, but I try to avoid them as much as possible by striving to be as consistent as I can," he said in an interview shared by Ziggo Sport.
At Cincinnati and the US Open, Sinner will attempt to defend the titles he won last year.
