Pushed Hard, Gauff Overcomes Mboko in Rome
Fresh off her recent finals appearance in Madrid, Coco Gauff advanced to the second round of the WTA 1000 in Rome this Friday. The world No. 4, facing young Victoria Mboko, had to work hard to secure a three-set victory (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) in 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Mboko, 18, whose rapid rise continues to impress, fought her way through qualifying before notching the second WTA 1000 win of her career (after Miami in March) by defeating Arianna Zucchini.
Against Gauff, the 2022 US Open champion, the Canadian played fearlessly, taking the first set 6-3 with four breaks of serve. However, her momentum stalled in the next two sets, as Gauff took control early in each.
A two-time semifinalist in Rome (2021 and 2024), the American continues her run in the Italian capital. She will face Magda Linette in the third round, seeking revenge for their last meeting in Miami, where the Polish player won in straight sets.
