Qualifying Exit in Berlin, Wang Reaches the First Final of Her Career
Wang faced Samsonova in the semifinals of the Berlin tournament. Until then, the Russian led 2-0 in their head-to-head encounters.
Having courageously come through qualifying, Wang has had a very solid run at this German WTA 500. The Chinese player has claimed prestigious victories against Jabeur, Kasatkina, and Gauff. In the previous round, she eliminated Badosa, who was forced to retire at the beginning of the second set.
Without flinching, Wang defeated the world No. 20 (6-4, 6-1) in a completely controlled match. With 88% of points won after her first serve, the player won her duel of the day in just over an hour of play. She had a 0-6 record in semifinals prior to this match.
Wang will now face Vondrousova in the final, who defeated the world No. 1 Sabalenka (6-2, 6-4) in the other semifinal.
