Rune advances to Cincinnati quarterfinals after Tiafoe's withdrawal

Last year's finalist, Tiafoe, unfortunately had to retire at 4-6, 1-3 during his round of 16 match against Rune. He appeared to be suffering from lower back pain. A tough blow for the American, who will drop out of the top 15 in the next ATP rankings update.
His opponent, meanwhile, secures a spot in the quarterfinals and will face the winner of the match between Atmane and Fritz.
With this result, the Dane has earned his 100th career hard-court victory. Among players born in 2000 or later, he ranks fourth behind Alcaraz (121), Auger-Aliassime (163), and Sinner (197).
A semifinalist last year—defeated by Tiafoe—Rune will aim to perform well in Ohio as he continues his pursuit of a second Masters 1000 title (after Paris-Bercy in 2022). He has lost his last three finals (Monte-Carlo and Rome in 2023, Indian Wells in 2025).
