Rune Already Warns the Tour: "I Will Come Back as a Better Version of Myself"
Holger Rune has been working tremendously hard since the start of his rehabilitation. The Dane, who suffered a complete Achilles tendon rupture during the Stockholm tournament in October, is expected to miss most of the 2026 season.
But the world No. 15 wants to give himself every chance to return to the highest level and has already made good progress, as he is at the end of the second phase of his recovery. Motivated by the possibility of coming back even stronger from this terrible injury, the 22-year-old player assured in recent hours that this ordeal can only help him become mentally tougher.
"Honestly, I've had a few difficult days. But those were just moments. And I've had my family and my team by my side from the beginning, which has been very important. That meant a lot to me.
I wouldn't have gone through this ordeal the same way without them. I have so much work to do that I don't have much time to think about anything else. I don't want to blame anyone.
"The ATP should adapt a bit to the players"
But I also don't believe in bad luck. I believe everything happens for a reason. And you know, the main cause of these injuries is fatigue. We are always human beings, we are not machines, robots, or anything else.
We all understand that we need to be in excellent physical condition. We can play five-hour matches, but I think the ATP should also adapt a bit to the players.
I can already say that I will be in better shape when I get it back. I'm putting in a lot of physical effort where I can and where I'm not limited for now, that is, in the upper body.
"I want people to know that I'm in good spirits"
What I will probably take away from this injury, for the good of my body, is that sometimes you have to accept taking an extra day of rest. When I come back, I will be a beast, because I have no reason to return without feeling ready.
I want to come back as the best version of myself, a version that doesn't break, a version that is unstoppable, a version that can beat everyone, not just for one week, but in every tournament.
And I think I now have the time to build that person. I want people to know that I'm in good spirits. I'm fighting with all my strength to overcome this injury, and I think all the support from the fans matters enormously... But I will come back. I will come back as a better version of myself and make them very proud," Rune thus stated for Tennis Up To Date.
