Rune is honest about his level: "For the last year and a half, I haven't been making the necessary efforts".
Currently ranked 13th in the world, Holger Rune didn't necessarily shine in 2024.
The Dane has won four ATP Tour titles since the start of his career, but has only played in one final since January.
That was at the very start of the season in Brisbane, where he was beaten by Grigor Dimitrov. In an interview with Tennis 365, the winner of the Paris-Bercy 2022 Masters 1000 confided in us about the mistakes he may have made in the past.
"Sometimes when you win, you think you have to train the same way, but everyone trains even harder because they want to beat you.
You have to get on the same train as them, and that's what I'm doing now," Rune began.
"I'm determined to improve and listen to my team. I've always believed in myself, but for the last year and a half, I haven't been making the necessary efforts.
From now on, I'm going to put everything I've got into training and I hope that this work will pay off in the end. Without physical and mental preparation and hard work, it won't happen.
Everyone wants to win a Grand Slam, but to do that you have to give it your all in training," he continues.
"I can only blame myself, because every decision I've made has been my choice.
It's fundamental to be surrounded by the right people. I think that's the case now.
Everyone I've come into contact with has done everything to improve my game, but there also has to be a connection with the human being I am," he concluded.
