Rune on his withdrawal in Madrid against Cobolli: "I had a slight knee twist during the warm-up"
This Friday, Holger Rune withdrew during his second-round match at the Madrid Masters 1000. Facing Flavio Cobolli, the Dane, ranked 9th in the world after his title in Barcelona last week, threw in the towel after losing the first set (6-2 ret.).
This marks Rune’s third withdrawal in 2025, having previously retired mid-match in Acapulco against Brandon Nakashima and in Monte-Carlo against Nuno Borges. On his social media, the 21-year-old Rune provided an update, explaining that his withdrawal was due to knee discomfort that arose just moments before the match began.
"Unfortunately, I had a slight knee twist during the warm-up today, and I felt it during the match.
I thought it was the best decision to stop, even though I was really looking forward to continuing my positive run in Spain. See you next year at the Mutua Madrid Open," the Dane wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
