Ruud struggles but comes through against Munar in his Australian Open opener
Casper Ruud will be in the second round of the Australian Open.
Seeded number 6, the Norwegian, who has never progressed beyond the third round in Melbourne, had to fight hard against Jaume Munar.
In the end, after a match full of twists and turns, the three-time Grand Slam finalist came out on top (6-3, 1-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 in 3h21 of play).
Beaten by Cameron Norrie in the last sixteen last year, Ruud is aiming to reach the second week of this Australian Major for the first time in his career.
In his next match, he will face the winner of the match between Nikoloz Basilashvili and Jakub Mensik.
"I know that my father made it to the last 16 here, so this is probably the only tournament where he still has an advantage over me. The rest of the time, I've had the best performances in the other tournaments.
But on a more serious note, my father inspires me a lot. Without him, it would be hard for me to be where I am. I owe him a lot," Ruud said on court with a touch of humor.
