Sabalenka asserts her ambitions: "I still have a lot to achieve in tennis".
Aryna Sabalenka has succeeded in dethroning Iga Swiatek. The Belarusian is the world's No.1 player, thanks in no small part to her two Grand Slam titles this year, at the Australian Open and the US Open.
She has also won two Masters 1000 titles, in Cincinnati and Wuhan.
In a few days' time, Sabalenka will be in Melbourne to defend her title, having won the last two editions of the Australian Grand Slam.
In an interview with The National, the Minsk native spoke about the forthcoming Major tournament, which kicks off in mid-January, and the motivation that drives her to be better every day.
"I can't be confident that I'll have a chance of staying number 1 in the rankings by retaining the Australian Open at the start of the year.
In fact, it's all a question of mental attitude. Of course, I want to stay there as long as possible and I'm working hard for that, but we'll see next season.
For me, it would mean a lot to win the title again.
I think the key is to concentrate on yourself and try to do your best, whether it's in Australia or any other tournament, and always do your best.
I still have a lot to achieve in tennis. I rarely lack motivation.
When I find I need it, I think back to when I started out and the desire I had to be where I am today, which helps me stay hungry and motivated all the time," Sabalenka elaborated.
