Sabalenka dominates Andreeva to reach Australian Open quarter-finals
The round of 16 at the Australian Open 2025 gets underway. The program opens on Rod Laver Arena with the first match between Aryna Sabalenka and Mirra Andreeva.
This is already the second meeting between the two players since the start of the season. In the semi-finals in Brisbane, the Belarusian got the better of her 17-year-old opponent (6-3, 6-2).
The scenario was no different on the Melbourne courts.
With 15 winners and 11 unforced errors in just over an hour, Sabalenka, who is clearly impressive in Australia, won the match in just three games (6-1, 6-2).
This was Aryna Sabalenka's 18th consecutive victory at the Australian Open, keeping her dreams of a hat-trick intact.
As a reminder, should she be crowned world number 1 in a week's time, she would become the first player since Martina Hingis in the late 90s to win this Grand Slam tournament three times in a row.
Sabalenka reacted to her qualification for another Grand Slam quarter-final.
"These are always tough matches against Mirra. She's young but so mature, she plays really good tennis.
I'm really happy to have come through in two sets in a match like that. Today, I came onto the court trying to hit the ball well and I sent a few missiles.
I'm very happy with my level in this match, the conditions helped me and I hope they'll help me for the rest of the tournament", she asserted.
In the next round, Sabalenka will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The Russian defeated Donna Vekic in two sets (7-6, 6-0).
In two days' time, she will play the Belarusian in her first Grand Slam quarter-final since the French Open in 2023.
