Aryna Sabalenka faced Elise Mertens this Sunday, her former doubles partner. An opponent she fares well against, having won their last nine consecutive matches.

However, the match started poorly for her. Despite an early break, the Belarusian lost the first set 6-3, conceding three breaks.

She managed to raise her level of play afterward, ultimately winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in two hours, improving her win rate in Madrid to 90.5% (19 wins, 2 losses).

She will face either Rebeka Masarova or Peyton Stearns in the round of 16.

I propose the following changes to the rules:

1...a walķover will not be a loss. We have no control of player's health. If he or she is entered in a contest we expect them to play.

2...an incomplete match is not a loss. If a player forfeits we pick another match if there are more to choose.

3...this also applies if TT cancels a match. TT will not take hours to decide an outcome.
