Safin's Surprising Reintegration as a Deputy Between 2011 and 2017
Current coach of Andrey Rublev and former world number one, Marat Safin had, for a time, disconnected from tennis. In 2011, two years after retiring from sports, he was elected as a deputy in the Russian Parliament, under the banner of the ruling party United Russia.
Using his tennis experience for his new life
He then stated: "Everything I learned in tennis, I tried to apply in my post-sports life. However, tennis and politics have in common that you need to know who your friends and enemies are.
In politics as in tennis, you have to live in the present moment and be very self-confident. For me, it wasn't difficult, especially since surrounded by people over 60, I was the most handsome."
He was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 2016 and stated that he had a representative role there, and, in order to carry it out effectively, he decided to give up his deputy mandate.
