"She told me I had no class and no education," Townsend and Ostapenko clash after their US Open match
Taylor Townsend will advance to the third round of the US Open. The American defeated Jelena Ostapenko (7-5, 6-1) for the second time in their three meetings on the main tour.
But the match itself quickly took a backseat, as the two players later had a very tense exchange during the handshake. On a court that was, of course, supportive of Townsend, the two women argued at the net for several seconds.
As she left the court, Ostapenko, who was booed by the spectators after the tense moment between the two players, also lashed out at the crowd on Court 11. In an interview with ESPN, Townsend shared her side of the story.
"That's competition. Players get easily frustrated when they lose. Sometimes, unpleasant things are said. She (Ostapenko) told me I had no class and no education.
She also told me I would see what would happen if we faced each other outside the United States. I beat her last year in Canada, so let's see what she has to say about that," said the 29-year-old player.
