Shelton: "We can be happy for a guy who beats us"
Ben Shelton showed some rare fair play in his press conference. Semi-finalist and outgoing player and author of a superb start to the tournament, the whimsical American lost out to an equally whimsical compatriot in the third round: Frances Tiafoe.
Although inevitably disappointed, the 21-year-old was nevertheless keen to congratulate his opponent, going so far as to explain that he felt happy for him: "I think it's important to show sometimes that you can be happy for a guy who beats you.
There are obviously things I want to improve. I'm a competitor. I always want to win.
But you know, the last thing I wanted to do was pout at the end of the game, because we played a great game.
Above all, I told him that if he keeps serving like that, he can go far. Now we'll take a look at all this to see how far he'll go."
