Simon's anecdote about the gift he never gave himself: "I always wanted an Aston Martin, but today, I came in a Peugeot 108"
Invited to Gaël Monfils' latest talk show, Gilles Simon answered several questions about tennis and his career while sharing a few anecdotes.
Like when he talked about the very specific gift he always wanted as a player:
"I never treated myself to anything. It’s silly, but when I was younger, I always told myself I wanted to buy an Aston Martin. Today, I showed up in my Peugeot 108 covered in bird droppings. […]
At the Paris Olympics, Daniil (Medvedev) saw me arrive in it. I asked him, 'What?' And he replied, 'You’re going full camouflage mode' (laughs).
You (addressing Monfils), you bought your cars and they just slept in your garages. We’re on tour seven months a year—you never even drive them.
I told myself that the day I finally buy an Aston and feel like I’ve had a successful career, I’ll go get bread with it (laughs). I’ll drive it all day.
My wife tells me it’s a completely stupid purchase. But it’s my gift to myself (smiles)."
