Sinner asked if Serena could be an option," reveals Butorac on the US Open mixed doubles
The format for mixed doubles at the US Open took a different turn for the 2025 edition with the presence of great singles players in the draw.
While he initially chose Emma Navarro (ultimately replaced by Katerina Siniakova), Jannik Sinner reportedly asked if it was possible to play with Serena Williams, according to Eric Butorac, former player and current director of player relations at the US Open.
This information was revealed on the Nothing Major Show podcast, hosted by Steve Johnson, Sam Querrey, Jack Sock, and John Isner.
Querrey asked if players like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, or Serena Williams had requested to participate in mixed doubles.
Butorac responded: "Sinner asked if Serena could be an option. I believe Serena is not back in the anti-doping protocol.
In any case, I haven't heard anything from Federer and Nadal regarding their participation.
