Sometimes, I have to hold back from responding to someone or commenting on something," says Ruud about the critiques
For several years, new generations of athletes have been subject to the pressure of social media. While some manage to ignore it, for others the relentless criticism from people online is hard to handle.
In an interview with The Guardian, Ruud discussed how he deals with these messages, as well as the mental pressure he has endured since he was young. It's a situation he has had to combat with the help of psychological support:
"Sometimes, I have to hold back from responding to someone or commenting on something. It can be tough to take, especially since it's never been easy for me mentally. Even when I was young, I would throw my racket too much. I cried, yelled, and complained about everything. I felt a little like I was running in a hamster wheel that never stopped.
I never thought I would need help, but I quickly realized that it was a smart decision for me to open up to someone to get different thoughts and perspectives on things. I'm happy and proud that I dared to ask for help and realized it was necessary for me.
