Stats: The Numbers Confirming Gauff’s Serving Crisis
Eliminated in the quarterfinals in Cincinnati by Jasmine Paolini, Coco Gauff once again struggled with her serve, committing a staggering 16 double faults in three sets.
While this total isn’t her highest of the season (her record is 23 in Montreal at the end of July), the world No. 2 continues to play with a second serve that is far from reliable.
As highlighted by the account Sliding Backhand on X, Gauff has played 19 matches this year where more than 10% of the points on her serve resulted in double faults. This scenario has repeated itself 12 times in her last 17 matches, including her victorious run at Roland-Garros.
These serving struggles are nothing new, as the American has already committed 430 double faults in 2024, the third-highest total in WTA history. This season, she’s at 293 with an average of 6.11 double faults per match, placing her just behind Katie Boulter (6.65) and Alycia Parks (6.74).
For comparison, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka had a tough 2022 season with 23 matches where over 10% of her service points were double faults. She has since corrected this issue, not exceeding that figure in 60 matches played this season.
