Swiatek on the controversial double rebound: "I told myself it was up to the referee to make the decision".

Swiatek on the controversial double rebound: I told myself it was up to the referee to make the decision.

Iga Swiatek has qualified for the semi-finals of the Australian Open after an express victory over Emma Navarro.

But in this match without suspense, a controversy emerged when the world n°2 won a point despite a double rebound.

Asked about this moment in the match at the press conference, Swiatek admitted that she hadn't clearly seen what had happened: "Honestly, I didn't see the replay because I didn't look at the screens and I wanted to stay focused and not keep this point in my head.

I didn't know if it was a double rebound or if I'd hit it with the frame of the racket. It was hard to tell because I was in full sprint. I don't even remember seeing the point of contact.

Sometimes you don't really look when you hit the ball. I wasn't sure. I told myself it was up to the referee to make the decision.

I was also waiting for VAR, but I didn't see it, so I carried on. I concentrated on the next point."

I don’t particularly think she was in the wrong too much here. You can’t always tell with bounces and rebounds. However, it is seeming to be a very common theme that Iga doesn’t do the sporting and honourable thing. Not a likeable character, her tennis sure does the work though gotta give her that.
