Swiatek overcomes Shnaider after 2 hours and 36 minutes
Despite winning the first set 6-0, Iga Swiatek did not have as smooth an afternoon as expected against Diana Shnaider.
She lost the second set in a tie-break and had to battle hard in the final set to gain the upper hand over the Russian, eventually securing a 6-0, 6-7, 6-4 victory after 2 hours and 36 minutes of play.
In her post-match interview, she was asked about the power outage that affected Madrid on Monday. She said: "I actually enjoyed it yesterday, I felt very relaxed.
I used that time to rest. There was no network, so no one was using their phones.
It was nice. Diana played well, and I'm happy I finally found the solution."
Swiatek will face the winner of the match between Donna Vekic and Madison Keys in the quarterfinals.
