The US Open is already over for Humbert, beaten in the first round by Walton
The US Open still doesn't smile upon Ugo Humbert, eliminated in the first round by world number 85 Adam Walton (6-4, 7-6, 5-7, 6-1).
The only French seed in the men's and women's draws, the Metz native did not hold his ground and concludes a disappointing Grand Slam year, with his only notable achievement being a round of 16 appearance at the Australian Open at the start of the season.
Although he had announced suffering from back pain before the tournament, Humbert struggled in the match with a total of 63 unforced errors and only 55% of first serves in. Walton, patient, managed to outplay the Frenchman and thus secure his very first victory at Flushing Meadows.
He will have a good opportunity in the next round against qualifier Coleman Wong, who earlier in the day defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-4, 7-5, 7-6).
