There's no better way to say goodbye," Fognini explains his decision to retire
Fabio Fognini announced this Wednesday during a press conference at Wimbledon that he is retiring with immediate effect.
The Italian shared that he would have liked to retire at the Monte-Carlo tournament in 2026, where he resides.
However, that wasn't possible, and he is happy to stop after his great match against Carlos Alcaraz on Centre Court.
He stated: "I just came to confirm that it's official. I'm retiring and saying goodbye to all of you.
I had already thought about it, and you all knew, but during this first week, I was very busy with my family and other things besides tennis, since Flavia was working on television.
Now, after thinking it over, I believe there's no better way to say goodbye. The day before facing Carlos, I had only one thought in mind: to enjoy myself on the court and try to play my best tennis.
I think everything went perfectly because of that, as I let myself embrace that mindset, and it helped me give my all.
I’ve suffered many injuries in recent years, but as a competitor, I always tried to give everything after each recovery.
However, after 35, it’s no longer easy. I think it’s a good decision to retire after playing on the most beautiful court on the tour against an opponent everyone knows.
It’s the perfect image that will forever remain etched in my memory.
