Thiem: "After my US Open victory, I wandered without a clear purpose"
Dominic Thiem, now retired, won the US Open in 2020, his only Grand Slam title in his career. While he thought this victory would be a springboard for his career, he revealed that it was ultimately the complete opposite.
On the Jot Down Sport podcast, he confided: "It took me a lot of research and experimentation to reach those last few percentages, to understand what I was missing to win a Grand Slam title.
Tournament and travel planning was extremely intense and exhausting; everything had to be optimized so that I could arrive at my best, physically and athletically, during those four Grand Slam tournaments.
At the time, I was quite naive, I thought that if I won the tournament and fulfilled my dream of becoming a tennis star, the rest of my career would be easy. I really believed that.
For a while, I wandered without a clear purpose. It wasn't intentional, it just happened that way. I had lived for so long and so intensely for one thing, and I sincerely believed that it was the only thing that mattered."
