Thompson's stunning victory over Michelsen in Los Cabos voted best comeback of the season by the ATP
The ATP continues its review of 2024. After electing the match of the season (Alcaraz-Sinner in Beijing) and the biggest Grand Slam upset (van de Zandschulp-Alcaraz at the US Open), we now select the top 5 biggest comebacks on the circuit.
The big winner in this category is Jordan Thompson.
In the quarter-finals of the Los Cabos tournament, he was trailing 6-0, 4-1 and 15-40 on his serve against Alex Michelsen. After saving three match points in the set, he finally found the resources to win (0-6, 7-6, 7-5).
It was a saving grace for the Australian, who went on to dominate Zverev and Ruud to win the title in Mexico in February.
In second place was Frances Tiafoe, who upset Holger Rune in the Cincinnati semi-finals.
Trailing 5-2 in the final set, he also saved two match points at 5-4 before reaching his first Masters 1000 final in front of his home crowd (4-6, 6-1, 7-6). He then lost to Sinner.
On the third step of the podium, we have to go back to the first tournament of the year. In Hong Kong, Jan-Lennard Struff saved nine match points against Marin Cilic before winning.
Cilic served for the match in the second set, but the German tightened his grip on the match and came back. In the end, it was the 34-year-old who made the difference (3-6, 7-6, 7-6).
In fourth place, Tommy Paul had to dig deep at the Shanghai Masters 1000.
Trailing 7-6, 5-1 in his second round match against Alejandro Tabilo, the American pulled off one of the most unlikely turnarounds of 2024.
He had to save five match points on the Chilean's serve, then managed to take the upper hand once and for all (6-7, 7-6, 6-2).
Finally, in Dubai, Jiri Lehecka saved five match points at the end of the second set on his serve against Karen Khachanov.
After a hard-fought battle, the Czech finally made the difference to win (6-7, 7-6, 6-4).
