Video - Australian Open's Message Celebrating Tsonga's 40th Birthday
This Thursday, April 17, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga celebrates his 40th birthday. Officially retired since Roland-Garros 2022 after a final battle against Casper Ruud, the Frenchman boasts one of the most impressive records in French tennis.
Playing during the peak era of the Big 3, Tsonga was one of only two players—alongside Andy Murray—to win multiple Masters 1000 titles (Paris-Bercy 2008 and Toronto 2014) at a time when Nadal, Djokovic, and Federer dominated the ATP Tour unchallenged.
In Grand Slams, Tsonga reached the final of the Australian Open in 2008, where Djokovic managed to defeat him in four sets. During that remarkable run, he took down Murray, Warburg, Garcia-Lopez, Gasquet, Youzhny, and Nadal. The Melbourne tournament has not forgotten the finalist from 17 years ago and has compiled highlights of the Frenchman’s most memorable moments at the event (see video below).
A former world No. 5, Tsonga also reached the ATP Finals championship match in 2011, losing to Roger Federer. He lifted the Davis Cup in 2017 and is one of the few players to have beaten the Big 3 multiple times in his career (16 wins in total). He concluded his career with 18 ATP titles.
