Video - Medvedev, Annoyed and Provocative: The Gesture That Made Headlines in Shanghai in 2024
Last year, Daniil Medvedev was eliminated in the quarterfinals in Shanghai, defeated by the eventual champion Jannik Sinner. Throughout the tournament, the Russian had expressed his frustration with the quality of the balls.
This was evident in the penalty point he received during his third-round match against Matteo Arnaldi. Frustrated, Medvedev pretended to spit on a ball before wiping it on his buttocks. An inappropriate gesture that provoked the chair umpire's exasperation (see video below).
And when it came time to sign the camera after his victory, the 2021 US Open winner continued to express his dissatisfaction by writing: "Nice balls."
