Video - Shanghai 2016: When Nick Kyrgios "Threw" a Match and Received an ATP Suspension

$16,500 fine, prize money forfeited and suspension: this was the exemplary punishment given to Kyrgios after his non-match in Shanghai in 2016. An episode revealing the Australian's temperament.
At the end of the 2016 season, Nick Kyrgios didn't want to linger in Asia. To leave Shanghai as quickly as possible, the Australian, despite having won in Tokyo the previous week, didn't beat around the bush.
Facing Mischa Zverev, older brother of Alexander, Kyrgios decided to throw his match. He made no effort on returns, improvised during rallies, and got into an argument with a spectator in the stands. This parody of tennis (ending 6-3, 6-1) led to a reaction from the ATP.
An eight-week suspension, which could be reduced to three if the player agreed to see a psychologist. A decision accepted by the Canberra native, who also lost his prize money and was fined $16,500.
At 21, Kyrgios was already making headlines for his antics. Nine years later, he has become an intermittent tennis player, hampered by his wrist injury.
