Video - The 48-shot rally between Berrettini and Zverev in Monte-Carlo
This Tuesday, Matteo Berrettini delivered an outstanding performance to eliminate world No. 2 and top seed Alexander Zverev in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000.
The Italian, who is rediscovering his best form after recurring injuries, overcame his opponent in 2 hours and 30 minutes of play (2-6, 6-3, 7-5). Late in the match, one of the turning points came at 5-5, 40/40 in the third set during the German’s service game.
While the two players had been locked in a fierce battle for over 2 hours and 15 minutes, a monstrous 48-shot rally unfolded between Berrettini and Zverev.
In the end, Berrettini, staying patient, waited for the right moment before attacking and struck decisively with a winning forehand as he moved forward, drawing a standing ovation from the crowd on Court Rainier III (see video below).
A decisive point, as the 2021 Wimbledon finalist then broke his opponent’s serve immediately after, before sealing the match in the following game on his first match point.
