Video - The Surreal Disqualification of Gulin on the ITF Circuit
This Tuesday, during the first round of the ITF tournament in Sabadell, world No. 407 and sixth seed Svyatoslav Gulin was disqualified against wildcard recipient Alejo Sanchez Quilez of Spain.
Despite appearing to have done the hard work in the match, the Russian was leading 4-0 in the third and final set.
After consolidating his double break by moving to the net, the 22-year-old Gulin lost his cool, shouting and making disrespectful remarks toward the chair umpire. The Russian turned to him, made inappropriate gestures, and followed up with the words: "Suck me" (see video below).
Seconds later, the umpire responded by disqualifying Gulin, even though he was in a strong position to win and advance to the second round of the ITF event (5-7, 6-3, 0-4).
As the incident began making waves on social media, world No. 77 Aleksandar Kovacevic reacted on X (formerly Twitter) with a post: "This can't be real," accompanied by several laughing emojis.
