Wawrinka loses to Kotov at Roland-Garros after a tremendous battle
Stan Wawrinka's adventure at the 2024 French Open is already over. The Swiss put up a fierce fight, only to lose to Pavel Kotov after a huge battle lasting over 3 hours and a half (7-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6).
Trailing two sets to nil, Wawrinka, the oldest player in the tournament draw at 39, responded perfectly in the 3rd set (6-1). He even made the break in the 4th set, only to see the 25-year-old Russian turn the tables and win the match in a tie-break.
The Swiss, winner of the 2015 edition of the French Grand Slam, probably intends to return next year. The passion is still there, as he confided after his victory over Andy Murray in the 1st round. But as the years go by, his results, ranking and fitness will have to allow him to do so.
