"We asked ourselves: what do we want for Andy?" Wimbledon's big announcement about Murray
The director of the Wimbledon tournament, Debbie Jevans, announced that Andy Murray, the winner of the 2013 and 2016 editions, will be honored with a statue on the grounds of the legendary English tournament. The Brit will be involved in the design of the sculpture, which will be unveiled in 2027 during the 150th anniversary of the English Grand Slam.
"We saw Rafa Nadal being honored with a plaque at Roland-Garros, which was very special. We asked ourselves: what do we want for Andy? We held a big celebration when he played his last match, which took place on Centre Court, but we wanted to create a statue of him.
So we are working closely with him and his team on this. The goal is to unveil it during the 150th anniversary of our first edition, which was in 1877," said Debbie Jevans.
It’s worth noting that Fred Perry is the only player to have a full statue at Wimbledon.
