We didn’t think it would actually work," Roddick reflects on the success of his podcast
For over a year, former champion Andy Roddick has been hosting a podcast titled *Served with Andy Roddick*, where he breaks down the latest tennis news with recurring appearances from former tour players.
With nearly 150,000 subscribers on YouTube, the show recently reached the top spot in the U.S. tennis podcast rankings. In an interview with *The National*, Roddick discussed the unexpected scale of his project.
"We didn’t think it would actually work, which was kind of a superpower. Because when you have no expectations, you’re not really afraid of anything. For me, it’s been great because I’m a bit of a tennis junkie, so when we bring people on, I can ask all the questions I’d never ask them privately. So, selfishly, it’s a fun little gig."
Jon Wertheim, a tennis commentator who often co-hosts the podcast with Roddick, praised his colleague’s ability to seamlessly transition into this new role:
"He has the résumé of a Hall of Famer but the perspective of an everyday fan who still asks questions. I feel like he’s always been, since his teenage years, very quick-witted. And that comes with a certain self-deprecation. He’s very observant. He knows how to communicate simply. And he sees the game through the eyes of a fan.
He doesn’t suffer from expert syndrome. He understands the fan’s perspective, but he also has the knowledge accumulated over his career, having played in major finals. I think in sports in general, people are watching the actual competitions less and less but are more interested in everything happening around it. So that’s something we thought we could tap into.
