"We don't change when we are number one": Muguruza shocked by the Alcaraz–Ferrero split

Carlos Alcaraz has ended his collaboration with Juan Carlos Ferrero. A split as sudden as it is incomprehensible for the tennis world and for Garbiñe Muguruza.

Invited on the microphone of El Larguero on Cadena SER, the former world number one did not hide her astonishment, while measuring her words.

"I was very surprised, like everyone. Carlos is world number one... What better season could he have? He has won Grand Slam tournaments, eight tournaments in total.

It is rare to change at such a favorable moment: when things are going well, we tend not to change. So yes, very surprised, I want to know more."

When is it really time to turn the page with your coach?

Drawing on her own experience at the highest level, Muguruza shed light on the debate.

She mentioned the sporting and emotional reasons that sometimes push a player to change course:

"I had three coaches. We value changing the team when we feel we need a new voice, or when we realize things are not going well.

You think about it when you see that you have had a weak year, that you have not achieved good results, that you are losing a lot, that this coach is not transmitting what he transmitted to you before.

We feel that we need to close this cycle and look for someone with new ideas, but it always stems from a bad moment, not when we win a Grand Slam or are world number one."

An observation that makes the Alcaraz–Ferrero split even more intriguing. Closing a cycle with a mentor who has led you to the top is never trivial. And in this specific case, the mystery remains complete.

Well the players and the coaches have a reputation to uphold. A reputation in a world that makes a difference concerning substantial amounts money. A player or coach doesn't want to talk badly about the other because that will help determine if another wants to take the place of the former in the individuals career. And there are PR agents who try to airbrush the fans and public's opinion and contracts with sponsors that dictate what kinds of behavior are acceptable.
We're never getting the truly honest opinion of any of these people unless that opinion is 100% positive.

As we move to the end of this month and also closing out the year I am wishing all of those following me a Merry Christmas and a Happy/Healthy New Year.

Let's make that wish for all 2000 plus players hoping for 5 wins each day. Hoping ŵhen we open the results page to see all green, and no red. And especially NO CANCELED matches.

From me and my rotti JAZ, I bid you all good night, and see you in...

why did tennis tonic void predictions on the match between Chwalinska and Huergo at the Quito tournament? The match was played to completion and on time. If TT feels the match is one sided, and of course it was, then don't put it up for prediction. This is getting irritating.

The finals are here, and we scramble for the best finish. I've been chasing "King" all year and I was able to shrink the spread a little. Skelp is also closing the gap.

Seasons best to all the regulars in our league.

Will you all be back in the new year.?

Steffi Graf completed a Golden Slam (not just a career Grand Slam) when she was 19. She is the only person to accomplish that, winning the four majors plus Olympic gold the same calendar year.
