"What's the point?" - The incident between Alcaraz and the chair umpire about a water bottle in Cincinnati
Alcaraz qualified for the quarterfinals in Cincinnati after defeating Italian player Nardi (6-1, 6-4). While the match was proceeding normally, a heated discussion occurred between the Spaniard and chair umpire Greg Allensworth.
The latter requested the world number two to cover the logo on his Evian bottle (the player's sponsor). The event's sponsorship rules state that G&J Pepsi is the official partner of the tournament for all food and beverages. This request caused confusion and annoyance for Alcaraz:
G.A.: “That’s what we’ve been told because of the logos and sponsors.”
C.A.: “But it’s not my fault. Why should I have to cover it? It’s not my fault. What’s the point? Why should I cover it as if it’s my fault?”
G.A.: “It’s my fault because I didn’t notice it earlier.”
C.A.: “So, because it’s your fault, I have to cover it? It doesn’t work that way... I’m not going to cover it.”
In the next round, the native of El Palmar will face Russian player Rublev.
